The campus and city are quite walkable during the day, but why are most people reluctant to walk at night? The unease about safety in walking at night reaches its 30-year high in 2023. Although avoiding nighttime walking has unfortunately become a new social norm in the Bay Area, many still have to—such as students with evening classes, night shift workers, those enjoying the nightlife, and 9-to-6 workers who can only walk for leisure after dark. The statistics we gathered and interviews we conducted with vulnerable night walkers reveal that key concerns of nighttime safety.
Our goal is to make night environments more welcoming by enhancing pedestrians' sense of security and providing convincing self-protection measures. When more people are willing to walk the streets at night, the streets will become safer and more livable, creating a positive reinforcing loop. Ultimately, this can lead to crime prevention and a more vibrant community.
